It appeared more beautiful to live low and fare hard in many respects； and though I never did so， I went far enough to please my imagination。 I believe that every man who has ever been earnest to preserve his higher or poetic faculties in the best condition has been particularly inclined to abstain from animal food， and from much food of any kind。

過低微的生活，吃粗陋的飯食，在許多方面都顯得更美；雖然我從來沒有做到這一點，但為了滿足我的想象還是做了許多努力。我相信，每一個曾認真地把自己的高尚的、詩人的（我改成：詩意般的，更貼切）才能保持在最佳狀態的人，都特別注意不沾葷腥，並且避免多吃任何食物。

Not that food which entereth into the mouth defileth a man， but the appetite with which it is eaten。 It is neither the quality nor the quantity， but the devotion to sensual savors； when that which is eaten is not a viand to sustain our animal， or inspire our spiritual life， but food for the worms that possess us。

進入嘴裡的食物並不能玷汙一個人，而是吃食物時的胃口玷汙了人。問題既不在食物的質也不在其量，而在於對口腹享受的熱切；當吃的東西不是為了維持我們的肉體生命，或者也不是為了激勵我們的精神生活，那就成了我們肚子裡的寄生蟲的食物了。

We are conscious of an animal in us， which awakens in proportion as our higher nature slumbers。 It is reptile and sensual， and perhaps cannot be wholly expelled； like the worms which， even in life and health， occupy our bodies。 Possibly we may withdraw from it， but never change its nature。

我們意識到自己內心裡存在著獸性，我們崇高的天性一睡著，它就會相應地醒來。它是卑鄙的，喜愛感官享受的，也許難以完全驅逐出去；就像即使在我們活著和健康的時候也佔據著我們身體的寄生蟲一樣。也許我們能夠躲開它，卻永遠改變不了它的本性。
