英語如果直譯是真要命，這個表達字面意思是：“把鳥給別人”，其實它真正意思是：

手勢起源“豎中指”最早出現在英法百年戰爭末期。英國弓箭手讓法軍損失慘重，法軍發誓在擊敗英軍後，將英軍弓箭手拉弓的中指斬斷。但結果法軍慘敗。在法軍撤退時，英軍弓箭手紛紛伸出右手中指，炫耀他們依然存在的中指。這一侮辱性的手勢迅速在西方國家“走紅“。

這個短語從字面來看，它貌似可以翻譯成“給某人眼睛”。但它真實意思是：
用愛慕的目光看某人，對某人拋媚眼，向某人送秋波。
這個eye 翻譯為“眼神，眼色”，比“眼睛”更合適。

這個短語從字面意思就是“給某人亮綠燈”，亮綠燈自然也就暢通無阻了， 所以它的意思是權威人士
“行了方便， 允許某人做某事或者允許某事發生”。
比如，老闆或者老婆終於允許你的請假了：
例句：
①My boss finally gave me the green light。 I‘ll have three days off。
我老闆終於同意了，我有三天的假。
②I’m waiting for my wife to give me the green light to go for a drink with my friends。

give the boot是給你一腳嗎？哈哈哈！當然不是！它有催別人走的意思，如果客人在你家待著不想走了，你就可以give him the boot，當然一般這句話用在朋友之間，並不代表你不客氣。
用在職場它還可以表示："解僱, 炒魷魚"。
